Internship Program

The Library Futures Internship Program is an applied learning experience for the next generation of information professionals and future leaders of information and technology policy and advocacy. Interns in the cohort-based program work across the organization with project advisors and mentors to advance projects in advocacy, law, policy, research, and outreach on a variety of topics facing public institutions, libraries, museums, and archives.

Program Outcomes

Interns in this program will:

  • Develop skills to define, communicate, and advocate for emerging technology and copyright issues within libraries to a wide variety of audiences.
  • Gain practical experience planning, implementing, and/or assessing a project with real-world impact on libraries and library communities.
  • Develop as a leader through personalized feedback, mentorship, and peer-to-peer support.
  • Build a professional network both through a cohort of peers and access to leading experts in the field.

FAQ

  • Am I eligible? The program is open to students and recent graduates within three hours of Eastern time. U.S. residency is not a requirement.
  • Do I need to live in New York City? No, you’ll work remotely with a combination of synchronous and asynchronous communication channels and check-ins. If you are located in New York City, you will have access to the Library Futures office at NYU.
  • How long are the internships? The internship program is offered over two, twelve-week semesters in summer and fall with a brief break between semesters. While participation in both semesters is not required, preference is given to candidates who can commit to both semesters.
  • Can I work with Library Futures in the spring? Spring internships are not offered at this time.
  • Are the positions paid or unpaid? LF internships are paid positions at the standard NYU student rate.
  • Who will I work with? Interns are assigned a project advisor who will oversee their day-to-day project work; interns are also paired with a mentor from the Library Futures community.
  • What is the deadline for applications? Applications are accepted on a rolling basis and new interns are accepted as space allows, though cohorts typically begin together each summer.
